What the tyre markings mean

XL: Reinforced tyre (XL)XL means Extra Load. The tyre is reinforced and can carry a higher load than a standard tyre of the same size. Always follow the vehicle's specified load index and tyre pressure.
M+S: Mud and Snow (M+S)M+S is a manufacturer's indication that the tread is intended to offer improved traction in mud and snow. By itself it is not the same as the tested 3PMSF winter certification.
3PMSF: Three-Peak Mountain SnowflakeThe mountain-and-snowflake symbol identifies a tyre that has passed a standardised severe-snow traction test. It is the recognised performance marking for winter conditions.
Rim protection: Rim protectionA raised rubber profile near the bead helps protect the rim edge from light kerb contact. It cannot prevent every type of wheel damage.

Good all-rounder
Second set of Yokohama on this car. The last ones wore well, expecting the same here. Braking in the wet feels a touch longer than my old premium set, but at this price it's fair.

Fine for the price. Slightly more road noise than I hoped on coarse asphalt. Driven about 3,000 km on these so far.

Good, not perfect
Second set of Yokohama on this car. The last ones wore well, expecting the same here. Fuel consumption seems slightly better since the switch. Stable and precise in summer heat.

My mechanic recommended Yokohama and he was right. Quiet, stable, no complaints. Early days, but first impressions are very good. No squirm even on hot asphalt.

The car feels more stable in crosswinds since fitting these. Not the grippiest in hard cornering, but for normal driving they're more than adequate.
